Covering an extensive area of 1,510 square kilometers, it shares its southern border with Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. The Masai Mara is an exceptional haven for wildlife conservation, renowned for its remarkable natural diversity of animals, making it the preeminent safari destination in East Africa. Within this animal paradise, you'll encounter an abundance of majestic creatures, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinoceroses, African buffaloes, wildebeests, giraffes, zebras, and numerous other species, all thriving in their natural habitat, unencumbered and free to roam the vast and boundless Kenyan wilderness that stretches for miles on end.

Interesting facts about Maasai Mara

The reserve's name, Mara, which means "spotted," is derived from the characteristic African scenery featuring small, bushy trees and shrubs scattered across the expansive, undulating grasslands, commonly referred to as the "savannah."

The surrounding areas of the Masai Mara is home to the Masai tribe, who also inhabit a significant portion of the Great Rift Valley. Along with their traditional attire of vibrant red "shukas" or body wraps, the Maasai maintain a distinctive nomadic culture and way of life.

The Great Wildebeest Migration takes place annually between late July and October, with the exact timing subject to variations in prevailing rainfall patterns. This remarkable event has earned recognition as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. During these months, over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes migrate from the Serengeti to the north, entering the Masai Mara.
