The R44 south from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond is the start of the Whale Route and one the most beautiful scenic drives in the Western Cape: Clarence Drive. It will bring you along the magnificent Hottentots Hollands Mountains on one side and the ocean coming ashore in False Bay.

There are plenty of parking spots on the road to give you photo opportunities. You can be lucky spotting whales (in the season) but especially the dolphins who seem to reside in Gordon’s Bay, can give you unforgettable moments to enjoy.

Interesting facts about Clarence Drive

Clarence Drive was named after Jack Clarence who was responsible for replacing the footpath between Gordon's Bay and Rooi Els with a proper road.

Clarence Drive provides great whale watching spots, all along the route every year during June to December.

The coastal drive stretches 48km from Gordons Bay, hugging Cape Whale coastline all the way to the tiny, seaside village of Rooi Els, where it suddenly turns inland and rises steeply up to the coastal plateau and swings inland to Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay.
