Windhoek is Namibia's capital and entry point to your journey through the country. It is a bustling metropolis that is quite neat and orderly. The city lies in a pretty valley, with buildings very much in the German architectural style.
The German colonial era came to an end during World War I when South African troops occupied the city in May 1915 on behalf of the British Empire.
The city is traditionally known by two names: Ai-Gams, from the Nama people and Otjomuise, by the Herero people.
The city is one of the world’s major trade centers for Karakul sheep skins.
