After spending time in the Namibian Desert, Swakopmund is an incredible, refreshing destination. This small-town lies directly on the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by dunes. This unique setting means that you can never get bored in Swakopmund. Activities range from sand boarding and quad biking in the dunes to kayaking on the ocean and visiting museums in the city centre.
Captain Curt von François founded Swakopmund in 1892 as the main harbour for the Imperial German colony.
You will notice that Swakopmund' street are extremely wide, this is because in the early 1900’s, everything was transported by horse and carriage.
The highest dune between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is 115m and dunes can move up to 2m a year.
