Interesting facts about Swakopmund

Captain Curt von François founded Swakopmund in 1892 as the main harbour for the Imperial German colony.

You will notice that Swakopmund' street are extremely wide, this is because in the early 1900’s, everything was transported by horse and carriage.

The highest dune between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is 115m and dunes can move up to 2m a year.

Mondesa was originated during apartheid, when Namibia’s towns were divided between the “town”, where wealthy whites lived, and the “location”, where blacks were forced to stay. Today Mondesa is a melting pot of different cultures, ethnicities and ever evolving and developing.
