Meerkat Addo Elephant National Park

Meerkats

Highly evolved and fascinating creatures

Information about Meerkat

The meerkat (or suricate) is subspecies of mongoose. They live in dry and desert areas and form a ‘mob’ that generally consists of 20 meerkat. They are primarily insectivores. Living on a diet of insects, but they also enjoy snakes, scorpions, lizards, eggs, plants, millipedes, centipedes and some small mammals. They forage and search for food while one of the group looks out for predators.

Interesting facts about Meerkat

Meerkats use complex coordinated behaviour, which rivals that of chimps, baboons, dolphins and even humans.

Despite living in the desert, meerkats do not need extra water in their diets, as they get all the moisture they need from the insects and grubs they eat.

Meerkats have dark patches around their eyes to cut down glare from the sun and help them see far into the distance.
